Worthseeing
So much to see...
You are spoilt be the choice you to see in Honduras therefore we present you a short summary of the most important sites.
The biosphere reserve of Rio Platano
It is located in the area “La Mosquitia”, trailess wild in the northeast of Honduras also know as the “mosquito coast”. In 1982 UNESCO decorated the Rio Platano as an official world heritage site to honour its natural, cultural and archaeological value. The forests surrounding Rio Platano are home to exotic plants, animals and birds and over 80 archaeological ruins which have been build from so far unknown cultures. The most famous of these ruins is the “lost city” also known as the “white city“.
La Mosquitia is part of the largest intact rainforest north of South America and covers about 1/3 of Honduras. You can only access this region via seaplane or small boats. The Mosquitia is homeland to many different native tribes which live integrated to the biodiversity surrounding of the tropical rainforest. All this explains why the Mosquita is also called “little Amazon” from Central America.
Citys on the Caribbean coast
At Puerto Cortes (close to San Pedro Sula) you will find the famous fort San Fernando de Omoa which states from the colonial time.
Close to Tela is besides the National Park Jeannette Kawas and the nature reserve Punta Izopo also the botanic garden Lancetilla which is a former research station of the United Fruit Company and offers today hundreds of exotic and local flowers, tropical trees and other plants from the whole world.
Behind the port city La Ceiba is the national park Pico Bonito. Due to a lot of rainfall and its high slopes within this protected area of this rainforest you are able to find breathtaking waterfalls and stunning landscapes almost everywhere. Some of the rivers are suitable for thrilling water rafting. The national park is all so home to a luxurious “Eco-Lodge” which is a proud member of “small luxury resort of the world”.
La Ceiba, famous for its annual carnival is also only a doorstep away from the Bay Islands. You can do a lot of different daytrips from here. For example a boat trip on the Rio Cangrejal, hiking through the rainforest or exploring the nature reserve Cuero y Salado to watch monkeys, alligators, sea cows and birds at the natural surroundings.
Port town Trujillo was the first capital of Honduras and is well worth a visit because of its colonial, historical and architectural highlights.
Other towns well worth a visit:
San Pedro Sula
Is located within El Valle de Sula, the Sula valley in the North of Honduras and is the industrial capital of Honduras. You will find the best shopping areas and the best infrastructure overall of this country here.
San Pedro was founded 1536 and because of it great location a fast gateway to all nearby tourist attractions.
Gracias
Gracias is the capital of the western district Lempira and at the same time a very interesting Lenca town. Gracias itself is one of the best preserved colonial cities and was between 1544 and 1548 the site of “Audiencia de los Confines” (place of trial), as this city was the governmental headquarter of whole Central America. Gracias is developing steadily into a popular spot for foreign tourists which want to visit remote, rustic Lenca villages. Have a swim at the nearby thermal spring or hike at the Celaque national park.
La Esperanza
La Esperanza is the high-altitude city of Honduras as it is about 2850 meters (9350 feet) above sea level and capital of the district Intibuca which is mainly populated by Lencas. The farmers market of this town offers a wide variety of goods which are produced by the peasant population.
Tegucigalpa
The capital of Honduras, Tegucigalpa, was a small mountain village in the past.
It offers a lot of cultural highlights like the cathedral San Miguel Arcangel and many different museums which also include the national Museum Villa Roy. You can enjoy your time there at the national theatre or at the central park with its busy market. You can have great day trips to the Valle de Angeles (if you have been there you know why its called like that) and Santa Lucia. Valle de Angeles is now famous for its great souvenir shops (even though there are other towns with better value for money)
Even from the “old mountain village“ Tegucigalpa you can easily reach the beaches from Cedeno and return on the same day. Those beaches are located eastward of San Lorenzo, one of the most important ports on the golf of Fonseca (if you know the supermarket Marks and Spencer yes that’s the area where almost all the things for export come from).
Choluteca is a bit further down south and in our personal opinion one of the most beautiful cities of Honduras. You will find very few tourists down there as it is very hot and not many foreign people know this town.
Another must visit places if you are into history and culture would be Comayagua.
The former capital of Honduras has an amazing cathedral and the oldest university of Central America founded in 1632.
The Maya ruins from Copan
Copan was one of the most important city states of the Mayas. At the peak about 20 000 people were living there. Unlike the general believe of many tourists the Copan Ruinas are not the only Mayan remains which can be found in Honduras but the largest and most popular ruins.
If you are interested in learning more about the Maya culture, we could show you for example Maya remains where you can enter a ruin on your own and in a calm atmosphere. As there is much more to find out about the Mayas we have a whole special about this topic on our homepage. Please check out Ancient Maya culture for more photos and information.
Lago Yojoa and surroundings
The Yojoa is the largest lake of Honduras which offers enough variety of landscapes to spend a couple of days there (or just come back a couple of times if you are lucky enough to stay with us at close-by San Pedro Sula ;-) ) You will find about 450 different kinds of birds here. For example toucans and parrots. A boat trip on the Yojoa lake can give you unforgettable impressions. Close by you can also find breathtaking waterfalls and some of the best fish restaurants of this country.
And so much more.....
