The country
A country of 3 different worlds
Honduras is a country which has a rich variety of nature, culture and archaeological treasures and which can be described by 3 different worlds.
The tropical nature
Our first world consists of the tropical nature.
Honduras is blessed with an incredible diversity of areas of natural beauty, which Central America is famous for.
There are a total of 107 nature reserves, which stretch across the country. The highest summits in the mountainious highlands in the inland are covered with mystic and gorgeous cloud forests. They are called „Crying Forests“, because of the permanent humidity arising from the fog of the clouds, which cover the forests all year round. Those forests border on the Carribean coast in the north of the country and form three national parks, two biological reserves and the renowned biosphere reserve of El Río Plátano.
The coastlines in the north and south are lined with wide-range swamps of old mangrove trees reaching for the sky.
There are also many lagoons along the coast with miles of unspoiled sandy beaches and its great fauna and flora.
Maya- Renaissance
The second world is the world of the Maya people.
If you talk about archaeological findings from the Maya culture in Honduras, the first name you are always going to hear will be Copan, comparable to Athens within the western civilisation of the ancient world. In fact, Copan is called the Athens of the New World. Because of its unique, rich of detail high relief style of the stone sculptures, Copan is often seen as the crown of Maya architecture. If you compared Tikal from Guatemala with New York because of its sky high temples, you would have to compare Copan with Paris.
Besides the fact that Copan owns the artistically most valuable sculptures made of stone, it is also the most explored and best-preserved of all Maya sites. Copan is also the only Maya site where the remains of two Maya queens have been found. The sculpture museum at Copan was built to preserve the original sculptures for the public and offers a great exhibition about the Mayas. The main attraction of the museum is the four-storied “Rosalila Temple” , which is a facsimile replication of the excavated temple. The close-by colonial city Copan Ruinas offers comfortable hotels, delicious food and is an excellent starting point for adventure day trips.
The Caribbean Paradise
All of Honduras’ north coast, which stretches over 750 km, borders the Carribean Sea.
Coastal towns like Puerto Cortes, Tela, La Ceiba and Trujillo are silent witnesses to the zenith of the fruit companies, whose presence and influence is only little perceived today.
Within the wetlands, close to those charming costal towns, you have the opportunity to explore canals which are abundantly covered with vegetation, lagoons with deep blue water and isolated tropical beaches in a variety of national parks and nature reserve areas.
Bay Islands
The Bay Islands are a group of 3 main and 60 small islands.
The Bay Islands are home to the second largest coral reef in the world. 95% of all coral species which exist in the Caribbean can be found there.
Utila ist the smallest and flattest of those islands. There you can still enjoy the special island culture in its purest form and its known as one of the best places to watch whale sharks.
Today, Utila offers the best value diving courses world wide.
Roatan is the largest of the islands. It is highly developed and has the most visitors by far. Roatan holds an international airport with direct flights from the USA and Italy and offers about 800 hotel rooms. A lot of cruises also stop over here today. Unfortunately, all the development went a little bit at the expense of its original character. This island is much more expensive than all the other islands and therefore, you will find almost only foreign people there as most of the locals can’t afford it anymore. But all this still doesn’t change anything about the beauty of this island with its endless sandy beaches.
The third of the main islands is called Guanaja. It is the second largest island. On his fourth and last journey to the “New World” Christopher Columbus named it “Isla de los Pinos” - the island of pines. The mountains, overgrown by pines, are perfectly suited for hiking tours where you can enjoy unspoiled incredible views. The attraction of this island is its untouched natural beauty.
We have fallen in love with this country and want you to get to know it much better too, as Honduras offers all what you need for an unforgettable holiday experience: sun, sandy beaches, unspoiled nature, cloud forests, Maya renaissance, living culture and above all very friendly people.
We hope to welcome you soon to discover Honduras with us.
¡ Nos vemos en Honduras!.
National anthem of Honduras
"Tu bandera es un lampo de cielo" (Your flag is a heavenly light) is the national anthem of Honduras.
It was introduced in 1915. The lyrics were written by Augusto Constancio Coello Estevez (1884-1941). The music was composed by Carlos Hartling (1869-1920).
Lyrics in Spanish
Tu bandera, tu bandera
Es un lampo de cielo
Por un bloque, por un bloque
De nieve cruzado;
Y se ven en su fondo sagrado
Cinco estrellas de pálido azul;
En tu emblema que mar rumoroso
Con sus ondas bravías escuda,
De un volcán, de un volcán
Tras la cima desnuda
Hay un astro, hay un astro
De nítida luz.
