Natural variety

Honduras stands more and more for eco tourism as they protect already ¼ of the whole country and they are continually protecting more and more areas.

Eco tourism

As this country doesn’t know any mass tourism (besides maybe the ruins of Copan and the Island Roatan) there have never been any gigantic hotels where you spend your vacation isolated from the locals.

You are much more in an instead contact with the people and nature of this country. As they founded a lot of national parks and biosphere reserves in time you can still find a unique diversity of plants and animal species.

We proudly support the eco tourism concept as this is the only way how you can protect the diversity of species.

Diversity of species

For example there are about 640 different types of orchid, 111 different types of snakes and 117 different kinds of trees in Honduras. Honduras is proudly in possession of 244 different types of plants, 16 species of reptiles and one bird species which can be found nowhere else in the world besides in Honduras. There are 228 known mammals including such as jaguars, giant anteaters, baird’s tapir, ocelots, margays, jaguarundi and pumas.

The most famous sea animals are West Indies Manatee and whale sharks. The best way to explore a lot more sea life is by diving.

The corral reef of Honduras offers the same diversity of species as for example the Mexican reef and the Red Sea.

There are 250 different reptile species and 25 of them can only be found in Honduras in particular snakes, turtles, crocodiles and lizards.

A great book for reptile lovers would be “Reptiles of Central America” written by Gunter Köhler.

Birdwatchers can enjoy more than 700 bird species. A complete list can be found at www.birdlist.org/honduras .

There is only one bird species specific to Honduras. This one is called Honduran Emerald (Amazilia luciae), a hummingbird species which you can see on the photo.
